2008 Driver Appreciation Letter

August 24, 2008

Normally when I sit down at the computer to compose a letter or memo, I don’t encounter much difficulty. Writing is one of my favorite things to do. But strangely enough, as I sat to compose this letter, I found it to be one of the more difficult compositions I’ve written in a long time – not because I couldn’t find the words – but rather, because there were so many thoughts that raced to the forefront of my mind desiring expression in written word, that I found myself overwhelmed and left not knowing where to begin.

So I began with the purpose for which this letter is written. This week marks the inauguration of an annual, week long event to recognize the great works you as Professional Truck Drivers do each and every day of the year. Sunday, August 24th and continuing through to Saturday, August 30th, 2008 is National Truck Driver Appreciation Week.  While we take time this week to express our appreciation in a more formal and public manner, please know that this appreciation is felt throughout the year – each and every day – each and every mile!

We thank you for your hard work and dedication in turning the miles that keep this company going and growing. We also share our appreciation to your families for the sacrifices they make that allow you to perform the work of your chosen profession.  I want to share with you a very brief comment posted online by the wife of a truck driver who wrote, “…You are the ones that make living a modern life possible….”

It could not be said better. Without your professionalism, skills and hard work combined with that of 3.5 million other driver’s just like you, this country would come to a screeching halt!  You are part of a team that creates the backbone of this Nation. Because you do your job each day – America enjoys the conveniences and ease of modern life.

Take time this week to bask in the glory for a moment. Reflect for a moment on your travels and realize the significant role you play – acknowledge the fact that you make a difference in untold numbers of lives because of the job you do.

You may think you’re “only hauling a load” – but if you stand back and take in the bigger picture and you see that new hospital that you delivered a load of material to – and you see the doctors who now have a place to do their job – and the patient whose life is being saved today because the doctor has this place to do what he has chosen to do, you can begin to see the part that “just hauling a load” has played in the lives of so many people. This is just one little example.

As I composed this letter, I was inside a building, sitting in a chair; at a desk, typing on a computer, in a well lit room, with air conditioning, surrounded by books, papers and electronic devices of various sorts; with a sandwich, soda and a candy bar – all of which was made available to me because one truck driver “just” delivered his load.

On behalf of the entire GFS Team, Thank you for being a part of our team and thank you very much for doing what you love doing and for doing it with dedication to safety, pride in your performance and excellence in service! Be safe.

             Respectfully, your GFS Team
